Vis-à-vis is a dwelling carved into the mountainous hillside of Sado Island, Japan, organised around a single incision between two peaks. Echoing its semi-palindromic title, the project establishes a reciprocal dialogue between upper and lower platforms, neither of which is primary. As sunlight enters the cut, light intensifies this spatial exchange, while a stair and hall at the rear mediate movement, connecting communal lower spaces to quieter upper rooms.
